Men’s Mental Health: Breaking Barriers in an Inclusive Conversation

Breaking the Silence
In the UK, men are statistically less likely than women to seek help for mental health issues. This can lead to a range of adverse outcomes, including depression, anxiety, and even more serious consequences. Men are often conditioned to suppress their feelings or to “just get on with it,” which can create the perception that seeking help is a sign of weakness. In reality, reaching out takes courage and is a significant step toward positive change.

Men experience a range of mental health issues, with some of the most common including:
- Depression: Symptoms of depression can vary, but men often exhibit irritability, anger, or aggression. This can make it difficult for them to recognise their own depression and for others to see it in them.
- Anxiety: Men may struggle with anxiety over work, relationships, and financial matters. Frequently, they feel pressured to hide these worries, intensifying their anxiety over time.
- Substance Abuse: Some men turn to alcohol or drugs as a coping mechanism, which can lead to a dangerous cycle. This temporary relief often exacerbates underlying issues, ultimately worsening mental health.
